Today’s half day we focused on catching some top quality fish. We didn’t try to catch a lot of fish but instead put the time and effort in for some quality bites. We landed 2 big Black groupers, 2 huge Mutton snappers, 1 big Goliath and flag Yellowtail.
Today we left the dock early headed out on a full day charter. We started the day off by catching threadfin herring for bait. Luckily today the bait was easy so we had a live well full of fresh bait in no time. We started our day on the edge of a reef in about 115 ft of water with our main focus being on mutton snappers. We were catching lots of kingfish on the live baits but the bottom bite wasn’t what I’d hoped it would be so we soon headed to a new spot.
After running a few miles we anchored up on a wreck in 190 ft. We were able to fish here for the remainder of the trip catching fish after fish until it was time to head home.
At days end we had landed at least 13 different species. The boys from Nebraska got to see all the Key West reef fishing has to offer!
Today we fished a 6-hour charter starting at 1:00 pm. We had nonstop action the entire trip catching lots of Kings and snappers to start off. Once the sun was getting low in the sky we put our focus on blackfin tuna. The tuna fishing did not disappoint. We had them jumping all around the boat the action was wild.
Today we fished a 4-hour trip starting at 8:00 a.m. We ran out about 5 miles and anchored up. We caught a bunch of ballyho and then headed out to a wreck in about 120 ft of water. We only needed to fish one spot we caught snapper after snapper a beautiful black grouper a few sharks and one monster Goliath grouper.
Today I had some great older clients that I fished with many times. Today’s weather conditions were not conducive whatsoever to going offshore. So we stayed close to the island and got to fishing almost flat calm seas all day. We caught an awesome variety of fish. By days end we had more than enough meat in the cooler and some really cool catch and release catches. Key West has so many fishing options that almost any day you can get out somewhere and have a great fishing trip. You can plan everything about your trip except for the weather being able to adapt and overcome is very important on the water.
Today I set up on the reef to do some snapper and grouper. About 10 miles from Key West we anchored in 80 feet in hopes of big yellowtail and maybe a grouper.
We had an amazing Yellowtails snapper bite. We could catch them as fast as we were putting lines in the water. So we had lots of snapper for dinner in the cooler. We turned our focus to the bottom fishing after the cooler was filled up with snapper.
The grouper fishing was good but the Bull sharks had other ideas. We lost a few nice ones so I changed the rigs. It was time to get even. We hooked 3 monsters and landed 2 out of 3 Bull. I first bowl was a little over 6 ft and definitely 200 lb and our second bowl was closer to 7 ft and easily 300 lb. Just an absolute unit of a fish.
Here in Key West the fishing really starts to heat up as the water temp begins to drop. As fall is setting in the fishing here is really heating up.
My last few trips the fishing has been awesome! We have been catching big yellow tails, mutton snappers, black groupers and so many other awesome fish species.
Summer is in full swing and you never really know what you’re going to catch. We started our day off today catching a few sharks and muttons on the reef. After that we headed offshore to a deeper wreck where we were able to catch lots of different fish on vertical jigs. We landed a few nice blackfin tunas some big amberjacks and a handful of bonitos. All in all an almost perfect 6-hour trip. We had lots of action a few big ones and plenty to take home and eat. You just can’t beat that.
Today I got to take out an awesome fathers and sons combo. Two dads and their young sons both seven and eight road out with me today on our 6-hour charter. We headed to a wreck in 150 where we caught a few barracudas and some small jacks along with eight big yellow tails we kept for lunch.
We then moved to a deeper wreck in almost 400 ft where we set up for some big jacks so the boys could battle something really big. Right away we hooked up and the boy 7 and 8 mind you teamed up and landed a nice jack about 45 lb all by themselves! After that it was one big jack after the other landing multiple fish over 40 and 50 lbs.
Today I fished a full day charter here in Key West FL, with one of my favorite crews. Cory and his dad Alberto have fished with me for years. Our first trip was not long after I started my business back in late 2017. Our game plan was to do a little bit of everything and that’s exactly what we did.
We started our morning off by catching live threadfin herring on sabiki riggs. After we had 25 to 30 baits in the livewell we headed out towards the end of the bar west of Key West. The truck was about 16 miles for out bait spot. We anchored up in 140 feet and put our live baits out. It wasn’t long before we had steady action. We caught three nice King mackerels along with lots of Bonita’s and 3 nice Blackfin tuna.
After a morning of live baiting we switch gears and started bottom fishing. We moved about 5 mi back to the east and fished a wreck in 120 ft. We caught two Black groupers and two amberjacks along with one Margate. After only a short while we moved again East to a wreck in about 110 ft where we caught four nice mutton snappers and four beautiful black groupers.
Grouper season is still closed however so all five groupers we caught today were healthily released back to be caught another day. May 1st is fastly approaching and I’m excited to be able to keep some groupers. One of the best eating and best fighting fish we have here in Key West. But to wrap things up today was a beautiful day flat calm seas comfortable temperatures lots of action truly a near perfect day on the water.
